Building an extension for office pavillions at the Vienna City Hall

Principles

An extension in the courtyard of the Vienna City Hall courtyard 2 was required to centralise the technical services of the municipal division 23. The planning arrangement is implemented in the form of a free-standing cylindrical building.  The extension is connected to the existing City Hall by a glass structured bridge. The central circular foyer opens into various segment-shaped office spaces.  

The existing square courtyard remains static in its original effect during the building of the new solitary extension.  In contrast to the massive masonry construction of the City Hall, the new pavillion is lightweight. The load-bearing steel structure is clad with technical anodized aluminium panels.

A particular aspect of the extension are the roof tops view of the surrounding premises.  
The flat roof  covered with white gravel marble receives its structure through a ring-shaped shed glazing and three central skylights.

The shell of the building as well as the window constructions and the skylights are uniformly made of technical anodized aluminium. The modern image of the pavillion through form and material transport is an exciting contrast to the historic architecture of the original Vienna City Hall.
