Leopoldstadt Urban and Architecture Focus

A positive connection between the former building is revealed through the independent and plastic
molding in the building's new expansion. The cantilevered structure of the new fire department
museum standing in the front yard road enables an attractive, distinctive appearance adjacent to the Exhibition Center and Prater. Together with the existing hose tower, the museum represents an urban signal in the public area. Taking advantage of the terrain, the areas within the fire brigade museum are built with mezzanine floors arranged with qualitative and unique interior effects. The large windows of the museum foyer and the upper exhibition space provides the ideal place for the use of public areas. The slim, longitudinal new structure allows maximum usage in the yard. It also accomodates the required ground arrangement of all vehicles in the two designated halls for vehicles. The extension areas of the guard are arranged on the first floor and connected via a bridge to the existing station. These modifications occuring during the construction do not disturb the existing building functions.

The new sports area and the equipment space arranged centrally is accessible from the new building as well as the existing building. To achieve a uniform effect of the facade, the parapet is covered with coloured screen printed wall panels. In order to reduce the construction phase and to reduce impairment during the guard operations, a steel frame construction is developed for the concept for the solid construction of the basement and upper floors. The extension of both upper floors will also be constructed with a steel frame construction of a Vierendeel truss.
