Competition Extension of the Viennese Town Hall

Urban and Architectural Areas

Through independent and plastic molding of the new building, a relationship is created with the existing building.  The demand of its own distinctive identity is also formed.  Formally detached from the entrance floor, the new building acquired an original, floating effect, that corresponds to its cultural importance without reducing the urban dominance of Hall D.
The overhang along the Märzparks is a distinctive urban character to the Hütteldorferstrasse and creates a spacious, covered area, which connects the ground floor foyer to the exterior.
The new building is positioned relatively wide in relation to Hall D, which underlines the solitary appearance of the new building. This large gap together with the shopping mall by the Vogelweidplatz creates an urban connection of the Nibelungen quarter. The entertaiment and catering sector of the new building is centrally arranged along this axis.
The register and information building is situated at the interface of the new building and the Hall D. The opening area binds the halls and the catering sector. The clear compact layout optimizes the internal development and enables the guided networking of individual functional areas. The continuous translucent glazing surfaces of the building, facing outwards the inner structure and steel structure spans the musical theater like a smooth layer of skin.  Both open and inviting, it gives a modern image. The facade is made from factory prefabricated,  structural glazing elements with a k-value of 1.1. The ceiling structure is coated with translucent elements. The ventilation function is composed of opening vents. The design principle of musical theatre is a self supporting, hanging over the garage free support system.
